The Wenvoe Wildlife Group
takes a close interest in the wildlife in the village
and surrounding area. We undertake surveys of plants and
insects, obtain and erect bat and bird boxes, carry out
maintenance on the Orchid Fields and give talks to local
groups as well as giving help to wildlife projects by
younger age groups. Anyone is welcome to join the
wildlife walks which run through the Spring and Summer
months.
Wenvoe is fortunate in
having an enormously rich and diverse wildlife. The mix
of woodland, some of it ancient, wildflower meadows,
lakes, quarries and farmland ensures that the flora and
fauna are both extensive and include rarities. Buzzards
and Ravens are seen commonly, Tawny Owls frequently nest
in village gardens and Barn Owls are resident nearby.
Common Spotted Orchids are to be found in their
thousands but we also have Bee Orchids, Pyramidals,
Early Purple, Greater Butterfly and one of the largest
concentrations of Common Twayblade to be found in the
Vale of Glamorgan. We have what is believed to be the
only site in Wales where Spiked Star of Bethlehem is
found.
With a good network of paths
and bridleways, access to see all this wildlife is easy
and much of it lies within a few hundred yards of the
village centre. We are always looking for helpers
whether untrained or specialist so if you have some time
to spare contact us via
