Village Whist
From historical records we have learned that whist drives have been held in Wenvoe for the best part of eighty years, making the game one of the most enduring leisure activities in the village.

Whist drives started off in the Reading Room ,now known as the Church Hall and have moved from venue to venue – the cricket pavilion, back twice to the Reading Room, the cadet hut in the old rope yard – now Orchard Close, the old school, the new school and currently uses the Community Centre which was the old school.

In the early days ,whist drives were held three times a week with Taly Cannan as MC. Arthur Davies became MC in the 1950's and continued for 50 years. The position is currently held by Bert Bates.

Our whist drives are held once a month at present, but we are pleased to have kept up the tradition of whist in the village.

We play for charity now and succeed in raising a considerable amount each year for a nominated charity.

VILLAGE WHIST

It’s not our usual practice to divert funds from our annual  charity. In fact, in all our years of charity fund raising I can only recall one other occasion which was when we sent a donation to the Asian     Earthquake Disaster Fund in 2005.

Everyone will have seen the graphic television images of the most recent disaster-that of the appalling floods in Pakistan and with this in mind, our whist players decided by majority vote that  we would send £100.00 via Oxfam to be sent to help where it’s needed. It’s not much in the grand scale of things but the situation is so grim that every penny is needed. Many players made generous donations and garden produce was sold to add to the total. Many thanks to everyone.

Winners in August were Linda and Audrey

The first whist drive of the autumn is on 9th Sept.

Please may I ask that players turn up on time so that we can start as close to 7.30pm as possible. Sometimes we can be a bit late finishing and a number of players have journeys to make.
