Wenvoe Sports
FOOTBALL - WENVOE COLTS
Wenvoe Colts was set up by a group of parents in 1995 to allow local children to
represent Wenvoe in the Vale of Glamorgan Football League. The club has teams
for children from the age of 7 to 17.
Although Wenvoe Colts is one of the smaller Clubs in the
League, our teams have always done well and regularly succeed at various
tournaments held throughout the Vale.
Wenvoe Colts offers all local children the chance to
participate in football whatever their ability. As well as being a great way to
exercise, the children benefit by playing a team sport and build up great
friendships with their fellow players. They also get to represent the village
throughout the Vale of Glamorgan.
GOLF
Wenvoe Castle Golf Club, located on the edge of the village, boasts one of the
finest inland golf courses in Wales, having hosted a European Professional Tour
Event as well as local and national Amateur Competitions.
The club has many playing and social members from the
village and has made a considerable effort to encourage youngsters to take up
the game and now have a Junior section some 60 strong. With the help of
volunteers and the Club Professional, our junior players are very successful at
local and national level.
The Golf Club is a popular venue for social events, open to
members and non-members alike, such as Weddings, Christenings, Anniversaries,
Dinners, BBQ’s, Dances, Quiz nights and Bridge evenings as well as offering
normal restaurant and bar facilities.
PÉTANQUE CLUB
Wenvoe Pétanque Club is lucky enough to boast two separate Terrains - the larger
of the two is based at Wenvoe Playing Fields in Station Road - this is used
mainly for social play (Sunday mornings) and for hosting larger events and can
comfortably accommodate up to 16 Pistes.
The smaller, but more challenging, Terrain is located in
the car park of the Wenvoe Arms public house, which is situated in the heart of
the village and provides 4 Pistes, used for League Competitions, but is also
available for social play for smaller numbers of players.
The Club currently has a membership in excess of 30, most
of whom are regular players, and fields 3 Teams in the South Wales League.
You’re welcome to have a go on three occasions before you
make up your mind, if you do decide you’d like to join the Club.
BADMINTON GROUP
We have been meeting since the 1970s and some of our players belonged to an
earlier badminton club in the village, which played on a more competitive basis.
The present group has around fourteen members and we play
every Tuesday evening and also meet up for social events.
CRICKET
In 1893 the grounds and square of the newly formed cricket club were situated
within the Jenner Estate. The players were workers from the estates and from the
village. As time passed the village of Wenvoe grew and the club membership was
formed from members of the village.
In 1993 the Wenvoe Cricket Club celebrated its centenary
with a 40 over game against Glamorgan and also organised other celebratory
games.
For the last thirty years the club has been part of South
East Wales club cricket organised through affiliation to the M.C.C.
In playing terms Wenvoe has always fielded two teams every
Saturday and has given a good account of itself and has won some of the leagues
in which they have been entered, particularly in the last decade in 1996 and
2001.
KARATE
We are a new club, having formed at
the start of 2009.
The club teaches the Shotokan style of
Karate and belongs to the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB), the largest
and most successful single style karate organisation in Britain.
The Instructor is Sensei Lyndon Davies, who has lived in Wenvoe since 1996.
Lyndon is a 6th Dan Black Belt with the KUGB and the senior KUGB grade in
Wales.
