Rotary Club
The Club, which was founded 10 years ago, now meets every Tuesday evening at the Horse & Jockey at Twyn-yr-odyn.

As a small dual gender club of 18 members, mainly from the village and the surrounding area, we place a strong emphasis on fellowship.

The Club plays an active roll in village life generally participating in social events. Our annual variety concert and our line dance are particular favourites. We also help with the village clean-up in readiness for the ‘Best Kept Village Competition’.

Our efforts spread beyond the village. Each year we arrange for a party of children from Oakfield Primary School in Barry to visit ‘Techniquest’ and we have planted an oak tree at the school. Mary Immaculate High School has been presented with a Rotary shield which is awarded to the most deserving student of each year.

Thanks to the support and generosity of the villagers we raise a significant amount of money for charity.

Local charities we have supported include Ty Hafan, Cancer Research Wales, Breast Cancer Wales, the Noah’s Ark Appeal, Meningitis Trust Wales and the Amelia Trust.

BARRY VALE ROTARY CLUB NEWS

Unfortunately I missed the publication deadline for last month's What's On so this report covers our  activities for June and July. Our annual Rotary 'Kids Day Out' was held early in June when we arranged for a class from Oakfield Primary School in Barry to visit the Hollywood Bowl in Cardiff Bay. The children thoroughly enjoyed their ten-pin bowling experience – a first time for most of the class. A guest visitor in June was Bob Gibbons - the newly appointed Assistant Governor for our District who has the big task of visiting all 73 Rotary clubs in the area during his tenure. Bob was very pleased to  receive a report on our achievements last year and our programme for next year and in his response he was very complementary about the enthusiasm he felt within our small club.

Ann Miller took over the Presidency of the club at our Handover dinner held at Cottrell Park golf club on 2nd July. The venue was ideal but, unfortunately, this year the catering failed to meet expectations. We wish Ann and the other club officers a successful year in office.  I previously mentioned the two annual awards the club proposed to introduce for children in the village school. At the end of year school assembly

Phil  Morant and Quentin Lewis presented an engraved silver plate to Olivia North who received the Citizenship Award and a trowel plaque was awarded to Class 5 for the Best Garden Plot. The enthusiasm with which the children greeted the awards promises keen competition in future years. Thank you Quentin for your work in preparing the  awards
