MOBILE LIBRARIES IN THE WIDER WENVOE AREA

As well as the excellent service available from the village library at Wenvoe, which includes four public PCs with broadband internet access, did you know we also have two mobile libraries which travel the length and breadth of the Vale on a two-week rota? We have several stops around the greater Wenvoe area, at Cambrian Residential Park off

Brooklands Terrace and the Horse & Jockey at Twyn yr Odyn. There are also stops further afield at St Nicholas, Bonvilston and Michaelston le Pit.

Both vans are equipped with a step lift making them fully accessible by less mobile people and carry a good selection of popular fiction and non-fiction for adults and children of all ages, as well as large print books and audio books on cassette and CD.

We regularly visit schools, nurseries, residential homes and sheltered housing complexes and are always willing to consider new stops where two or more residents are willing to commit to using the library on a regular basis. You can use your usual Vale of Glamorgan library card on the mobiles and of course, reservations are now free if we don’t have the books you want on the van.

A full alphabetical timetable is available on the Vale of Glamorgan website on the libraries’ pages, where you will also be able to access our 24-hr Library by using your library card and unique pincode.

Everyone will have seen the graphic television images of the most recent disaster-that of the appalling floods in Pakistan and with this in mind, our whist players decided by majority vote that we would send £100.00 via Oxfam to be sent to help where it’s needed. It’s not much in the grand scale of things but the situation is so grim that every penny is needed. Many players made generous donations and garden produce was sold to add to the total. The day began cloudy but clear and we had high hopes that unlikeprevious years, this would really be a GARDEN party, but as members and guests began to gather at the tables laid out in the garden, a fine drizzle sent everyone indoors. Our thanks to Madeline for organizing the event, to our members who donated the refreshments raffle prizes and items for the sales table, to members of other WIs who attended and to former members Pam and Phyllis who volunteered their help with teas etc. giving current members theopportunity to have a relaxing afternoon.
Many Club members, along with partners, enjoyed a fundraising tea at Fonmon Castle in July. The event was organised and hosted by Beppe and Christine Villa in aid of the Rudolf Steiner Camphill Centre for Residential Care, Therapeutic Work and Lifelong Learning. The event, which was very well attended on a pleasant sunny afternoon, raised over £10,000 for the charity.

The sun also shone on the day of President Ann's garden party for club members and families last month. This very enjoyable get-together raised £200 which was donated to Cancer Research Wales. In response to the Rotary International appeal for emergency aid to Pakistan, following the recent flood disaster, the club donated £150 for the supply of a 'water supply box'. The Rotary Club of Chelwood and four other Bristol clubs are coordinating this invaluable relief programme.

District Governor Donna Wallbank and her husband Steve visited the club last month on her tour around the 71 Rotary clubs in district 1150. In her enthusiastic address she referred to the great work done by Rotary clubs world-wide and, in particular, the 'End Polio Now' campaign which is three quarters of the way to reaching the target of £200m.

The Bill Gates Foundation has pledged to double the figure when the target is reached – a huge incentive! onna also passionately referred to Mary's Meals – the international movement to set up school feeding projects in communities where poverty and hunger prevent children from gaining an education. Mary's Meals provides free daily meals for chronically hungry children in their own school. In this way the hungry child is encouraged to attend school and get the opportunity to learn. Through the organisation's local volunteers and bulk purchasing of basic food, £9 provides enough food for a child for a year.

Further details can be obtained from the Mary's Meals website. Past President Stan Elworthy will be taking part in the Great North Run again next month raising money for Cancer Research Wales at Velindre Hospital. Sponsorship forms are available from club members and we look forward to your continued support.

Last year, we successfully held a “jewellery” event in the Wenvoe Arms and we have plans for this again on the 28th October. Carrots, beetroot and cabbage have also been prolific. The onions grown from setts are lifted and drying offnicely at home in the greenhouse. Try and keep on top of new weed growth by regular hoeing.
Within just a few weeks of being installed one of the new kissing gates on the footpath through the Whitehall Quarry has been vandalised. Kissing gates were especially requested after the previous stiles were broken to make it easier for the passage of people using the footpath but obviously others who now find they cannot have free passage for their bikes, motorcycles etc. (these are not permitted on footpaths) have taken it upon themselves to smash their way through again. Anybody who has any information should pass it to the Clerk to the Council or police.

With the continuing progress towards the restoration of the Upper Orchid Field as a traditional meadow, July and August saw a Splendid spread of Knapweed, a favourite of bees, and the resultingnumbers of bees on the field was particularly encouraging. Also, in contrast to previous years we had large numbers of butterflies, particularly Common Blues, Ringlets and Small Coppers.

New species identified included several hoverflies but it was good to find two wildflowers associated with old meadows, the Field Poppy and Corn Marigold also putting in an appearance. The herb, Borage, and the Dark Bush Cricket were recorded for the first time.

A notable event in the month was the receipt of a cheque from Waitrose for £480. Joyce Hoy received the donation on our behalf and was able to tell those present about the Upper Orchid Field and the contribution of the Wenvoe Wildlife Group. Our particular thanks go to Waitrose for this money which will go towards bird and bat boxes and the purchase of trees and shrubs where we have suitable places to plant them. Our thanks also to those of you who shop at Waitrose and helped our cause by popping your green voting tokens in the appropriate box.

One disappointment has been the lack of progress towards getting agreement from the Vale of Glamorgan Council to plant up the piece of land known as the Strip as a traditional orchard. This long very narrow strip of land is owned by the Council and leased to Cemex but has been untouched for many years and is now over waist deep in bracken and bramble. Our offer to clear the land and plant it up as an orchard with donated trees (around 30 are already on offer) would have made much better use of this abandoned area. Anyone interested in supporting this cause should contact the Wildlife Group.

One of the commonest insects around during July and August both in your gardens and in the countryside are Hoverflies. Often confused with wasps because some have yellow and black markings they are in fact quite harmless and many are positively beneficial. Some look like bumblebees and these use mimicry to enter the nests of bumblebees and lay their eggs there.
